Hello friends....

It has been way too long....I have been really quiet on the scrapping front, just usual Tuesday Therapy sessions, and then a Project Life catchup a couple of evenings a week.

I do have some exciting news, I was invited by Creative Hands Dubai to instruct a beginners Scrapbooking Workshop at Zayed University last Tuesday. It was such an honor and and an amazing experience :D The University is so amazing and filled with such lovely friendly ladies :D

While in South Africa (home) during the summer, I was given a picture by my mom. It is a picture of her, as a bridesmaid at her sisters wedding in 1952, she was 15 years old. I just couldn't believe how much she looked like a disney princess....

I wanted to do something really special with the photograph, and was toying with making a really whimsical, fantasy, princess type page. Well, that was all turned on it's head!!! We were at our monthly crop at Creative Hands, and Annais was working on a page using some Maya Road chipboard die cuts.....I fell in love with the idea immediately.

This is the page I ended up doing......

I am currently working on a travel album from our epic summer vacation....It has been a long while since I have worked on an 8 x 8 album and to scrap multiple photos per page is totally outside of my comfort zone....

It is exercising my scrapping brain which is always fun :D

A Little Bit of (Tuesday) Therapy

Tuesday is officially my favorite day!!! It is TT Day... it is when my scrappy friends and I meet to do a little bit of scrapping, a lot of chatting and lots of coffee/tea/cookies :D

Last week I downloaded a Prima App for my iPod. I was a little disappointed as I was hoping to do more of my own editing on the layout, but, it is just a done layout, where you add a photo....

This is the layout I "made" using the Prima App:

It is an awesome layout, but not my own, all I did was add the photo. So, at TT yesterday, I decided to give it a bash and scrap lifted it....

This is result:

I had a lot of fund doing this page and building up all the layers :D

I ended up with a little time to spare, so I did another quick layout...not nearly as much fun as all the building done on the page above :d

Hello

I have had so much fun lately in my little craft room :D I have some really nice pictures from our summer vacation....good photo's make for fun scapping.

This is a page I did of my son and nephew. We were in South Africa and on the COLDEST day there, we decided to go to a garden centre where they had a play area for children.....the kids were totally unaware of the weather, meanwhile, my mother-in-law and I FROZE.....

I just love these hot air balloons :D

I have hunkered down to get my Project Life album up to date....It is a momentous task as I have 6 weeks of vacation to update, and then the 3 weeks since being home (shew). NOTE TO SELF: Don't let Project Life fall behind....hectic to catch it up:D

Hello

My little ones started school today. I have so loved having them home for the 9 week summer break. As sad as I was to have my favorite little people off at school, I did utilize the time by getting a bit of scrapping done!!! I did a bit of stuff on my travel journal, and really had fun "reliving" the holiday through the photographs.

I managed to do a bit of catchup on my Project Life album, and have had to be a little creative with the flow of it, as I didn't have pictures from every day, or had a million pictures I wanted to include from one day....I got around this by changing the format briefly for the duration of our 6 week vacation. More on that in a later post, once I have it up to date and can show you how I got around not having a picture a day :D

I want to share a layout I did just a few minutes ago!!! From start to finish, all done in 40 min. This is one of the reasons I swear by pre-planning a little on layouts. When I get some spare time, but not enough to sit down and do a layout, I choose some photos, print them out, then get at least the paper to go with that photo sorted out. If I am a little flush with prep time, I rummage through my embellishments to see what goes with the layout. That way, when I do get time to scrap, I don't spend valuable time trying to find the right things to go with the layout.

Just an example, I have 14 pages ready to go (mostly just with the photo and paper). What I do then, is when I am going through my embellishments, like I did for this layout, if I find an embellishment that will go with one of the other pages in progress, I just add it into the relevant sleeve....

For me, I find it is the best way to economize on my scrapping time!!!

This is a layout of my precious daughter and my adorable niece. There is just 6 months age difference between then, and because they are in South Africa, and we are in Dubai, they don't get to spend nearly as much time as we would all like together. The last time these two little sausages saw each other was in 2009

There is a little story behind this picture, as you can see, they are wearing swimming goggles, and you are right in guessing they were swimming, what you probably don't know, is that it was WINTER in South Africa at the time. The weather was chilly and the water was freezing!!! Only children will not even bother about the elements when it comes to having fun with friends!!

I layered many different embellishments here, including chipboard, prima flowers, fabric and ribbon flowers, die cut sticker flowers and chipboard die cuts from Basic Grey and American Crafts.

Tim Holtz is the man!!!! I absolutely love these tickets!!! Not to mention the super duper flower ribbon trim from Webster's Pages :D

YEs, even my little owls got in there. This Martha Stewart emboss and punch is my all time favorite. I try and squeeze these little cuties in to every layout :D

Christmas Planner

I was catching up on all my favorite blogs last night. As you all know, I am a huge fan of Rahel Menig at SwissgirlDesigns. Her latest post was of a Christmas Planner she created for Crate Paper (Yes, she is a CP Girl!!!).

I immediately fell in love with this little treasure and thought it was such an awesome idea to keep all your Christmas ideas in one neat, tidy little note book!!! So, straight after dinner, I retreated to my "Girl Cave" (aka Scrap Camp) and made a little planner for myself.

I was a little creative with the sizing as I used what I had available to make the planner. You can find the tutorial to make the mini journal HERE. Then you just embellish it accordingly for the Christmas Planner.

Here is my take on the Christmas Planner:

I used an A4 pice of printed paper and folded it in half lengthwise to use as my cover. I created pockets in the front and back covers, just to store extra bits if necessary.

I loved Rahel's idea to add a little envelope for gift tags...

The planner is really quite small and is very transportable!!

I had a lot of fun making this mini journal and it was really quick and easy to do. I have a few more ideas to do with this mini, and one is to make a recipe book with my favorite recipes, to give as a gift :D

Scrapping After WAY to long!!

Hello :D

I have finally managed to get some time in my craft room, and boy.....have I had fun :D. We spent most of summer away, and even though I did take an "emergency scrapping stash" with me, I didn't really find the right time to do some crafting.

So, without much ado, here are my latest projects....

This was the first page I did after coming back from a super long summer holiday. I just had to scrap these photos of us on, under and in front of the Eiffel Tower

Laduree is my all time favorite macaroon shop - yum, yum!!! I was lucky enough to enjoy macaroons from both the Laduree in London (Harrods) as well as on the Champs Elysees.

Today I decided to go hide in my girl cave again, and I completed 2 pages, both are of my precious little children on St Michaels Beach, KwaZulu Natal, South Africa.

I had tons of fun with layering and stamping :D

I love the little flag I made with a skewer and a Maya Road canvas bunting flag :)

I hope to be able to get some more scrapping done soon. I have really missed expressing my creativity :D

6 Weeks Away (PART 1 - LONDON)

Hello!!!

Wow, I cannot believe it's less than 2 weeks before school starts again after a very long (9 week) Summer Holiday!!!!!

My husband and I have not had a proper holiday, just the two of us, since our honeymoon 11 years ago, so it was such a treat to be able to travel this year without our 2 children. Not that we needed a break from them, it was just nice to have an adult holiday that didn't revolve totally around nappy changes, meal times and sleep times (not to mention the moaning from being dragged around a new city for hours on end!!)

So, it was with some planning that my mother-in-law planned a trip to the UK via Dubai. On her home-bound leg, she stayed with us for a week, then took our two children with her back to South Africa, and my husband and I left the following morning for a 2 week holiday in London (and surrounding area) and Paris.

Both of us had been to London before, so we opted out of doing the super touristy things as they had been done :D. We stayed with my oldest and bestest friend in London. She is a bit of a foody, so we did a lot of "eat a little, often" with her in all kinds of amazing eateries, including amazing home based meals. After our first few days in London, I decided to call this part of our vacation "EAT".

And the end result, topped with grilled chocolate and salted caramel sauce....YUMMY!!!

As you can imagine, I am itching to get into my scrap room to start scrapping these photo's but alas I will have to wait for school to start and Tuesday Therapy to start up again before I will get a bank of time to sit down and sort out all my photos, ephemera and ideas!!!

Hello my fellow faithful follwers...It has been a while....I have been trying for weeks to simplify the clutter which has become my life, in order for me to have more room to do the things I love like scrapping and blogging, and I have failed....I have sorted through the things on my plate, purged the ones I cannot give proper attention to, and I have ditched a whole lot of fun things, in order to make room for important things like children, family, my home....guess what...I still don't have enough time to scrap.....

I manage to only do my scrapbooking on Tuesdays when I am with my TT (Tuesday Therapy) crop group!!! Needless to say, I have very few layouts to share with you....but, here they are :D Hope you enjoy

These layouts are from the Lil Bees Boutique April Kits...yummy products :D

And these pages were created using the May kit from Lil Bees Boutique, and what can I say, each item in this pack just had my name written all over it...I love the colours, textures and embellies!! I added a couple of things from my stash to the kit like paper flowers, washi tape and some printed paper. I really had fun working with this kit and look forward to seeing what is in next month's kit :D

My name is Jo and I am a stay at home mom of 2 lovely little people, aged 9 and 6. I started scrapbooking when my oldest was born. I applied to be on the DT as I felt I wanted to be a little more challenged in my scrapping, as I felt I was in a bit of a creative rut and was fortunate to be picked as a DT in January 2011 and have had a ton of fun being part of an awesome team of ladies, who are not just there to share scrappy things with, but offer a shoulder should you need one!

Our Blog Hop challenge was to pick one of the older page sketches by Pamela and then create a layout using it as inspiration. I searched through the archives and found this lovely little gem....Sketch 159.

Scrapbook Challenges ABC's of Me - N

I have been a little quiet lately. I apologize , it has been school holidays and I haven't had much computer time.

I have been busy on a little crafting project together with my 2 wonderful children. I will share mine with you soon. I just want to do a little more work on it :D

The ABC's of Me challenge on Scrapbook Challenges is so much fun. You scrap a page about yourself using each letter of the alphabet and end up with 26 awesome pages about yourself....how many of you actually scrap about yourself without being prompted to do so by these sort of scrapping challenges, or if you are required to take along a picture of yourself for a class???

I have recently done the letter N and set the challenge to use a repeated picture on the page. Here is my take on the page.

Confessions of a Scrapaholic

Yesterday after an awesome scrapping session with my Tuesday Therapy peeps, I came home and decided to sort out my stash. You see, we have a nice little thing going on with the girls who crop together at my friends house...we go through our stuff from time to time and "recycke" our stuff. You know, the bits and pieces that are we no longer use. Partial rub-ons. Papers we bought for a project album which we have not used and no longer need, part packs of embellishments, etc. etc. We put them in a box and we go through each others unwanted bits and pieces and see if there is anything we would use. We call it our TWO DIRHAM BOX. So we get a little bit of "drug" money back from our unused stuff and we can then buy MORE stuff....

So, I decided to sort through my embellishment stash and I have come to the conclusion that I am an addict. I have tons of stuff, bling, letters, stickers, chipboards, rub-ons, tags, flowers, you name it. So I culled my stuff yesterday. I am shocked and amazed at how many oddments of scrapping stuff I have, which I hoard in the event I will use it, only to buy more stuff when new stuff comes out!!!! Urgh, it is a vicious cycle...

My goal it to keep only the embellishments which are CURRENT to my projects and scrapping style and get rid of the rest!!! Clutter free environment equals a good scrapping mojo!!!

In a couple of months, I will go through my paper stash and get rid of the old stuff there too. (I have some papers from when I started scrapping 9 years ago and I know I won't use them, but I am hanging on to them for sentimental reasons????)

Here is my challenge to you....if you have a crop group, suggest doing the same "TWO DIRHAM BOX" idea and clear out your stash. You will be surprised at what you have hiding in the back of your embellishment drawer. You will find things which will re-inspire a page or idea, you will be lighter of load when searching for "something" for "that" page, as you will have less stuff to wade through AND on the plus side, you will get a little back and be able to invest in something special....Who knows, you may even make enough money to get that special tool you have been after but felt it was too expensive :D

Baker's Twine & Washi Tape

I trust you have all had an awesome week-end. I have been full tilt this week-end with my 9 year old's birthday party. We started with a visit to the Birds of Prey Show and then 4 of his friends came for a sleep over....what a laugh!!!

I recently did a little retail therapy online, and found a little treasure on Etsy.com. I found some Baker's Twine, 12 colors spooled off onto wooden ice-cream sticks (super cute) and also some Washi Tape. I have been after both of these products for some time, and was very pleased that it took 6 days to reach me by normal post from the States :D

The Baker's Twine is just what I need for my new fave embellishment - Bunting. I am loving bunting at the moment, and the twine is less bulky than conventional string and embroidery thread, keeping the bulkiness down. It also comes in really great colours :D

Second on my list is Washi Tape. Decorative Japanese masking tape. I have used it on one layout so far and am confident that it will make it's appearance on a few more pages in the near future :D

New Children's Book

How do you explain to children that their parents are separating or getting divorced? It is a subject which should be addressed with sensitivity, as often the children are too young to fully understand the reasons for the separation. A very good friend of mine who has gone through this process recently, has written this illustrated book.

The book was written as a guide to couples with young children that are about to go through the divorce process. Using guidance obtained from a number of counsellors, therapists and teachers the themes, content, and style were adapted to suit the needs of children aged between 3 and 7 years. When facing the prospect of a separation, (either through divorce or the breakdown of a long term relationship) parents of young children are faced with the extremely unpleasant task of letting their children know that the circumstances they have grown to know will soon change. This book is structured to specifically address the reality that often creatures, regardless of species, may not be able to stay together, but that life can continue. In telling the story the focus has remained with the children and ensuring that they understand that while the situation will definitely affect them, it is not their fault, nor is it a situation that involves them. Ideally, the publication will also allow the parents to gain a little more perspective on the situation and to realise that they can resolve their issues without allowing them to cause permanent emotional scarring in their children.

It has been a while since I have posted. It just seems that the days turn to weeks way to quickly and I barely find the time to check blogs, let alone post on blogs :D.

I crop with a group of great friends every Tuesday morning, and we have affectionately called ourselves "Tuesday Therapy". It is a lovely opportunity for us to get together and chew the fat. On the odd occasion that one of us arrives in dire need of therapy (or in girl talk, desperately needing a moan session), we always find ourselves amongst a group of friends who will nod in agreement when we moan that we live with the worst husband on the planet one week, and once again nod in agreement when we sing our fantastic, lovable, generous husbands praises the next :D True friends are the ones who will agree with you, no matter what they think ;)

I started thinking about how often we pack up to scrap, and was wondering if there are any of you out there who never know what to take, always end up taking too much, or in some cases too little, and end up sitting at a crop, frustrated and not scrapping a single thing. I started by jotting down a few pointers, and ended up writing a 2 page document of how I like to organise my stuff for travel scrapping. I realize that this is an entirely personal choice, as we all have different ways of packing our stash, but thought it would be nice to share with you how I do it :D

I have been scrapping for over 9 years, and during this time, I have hosted many crop sessions, taught countless lessons, attended numerous crop sessions at stores and at friends houses, as well as frequented Scrapbooking Conventions.

In the early days it was a simple matter of loading all my stash (a few pieces of paper, 3 punches, some adhesives and a paper trimmer), into my small carry tote and I was set. As time went on and my stash grew to a size which no longer fitted into my nifty little “I will never need another crafting carry tote” bag, I had to start sorting out what was necessary to take with. Over the years I have developed a planning system that works for me, and I would like to share some ideas with you, which you can use and make your own, to suit your scrapping away needs.

GOING TO AN OPEN CROP

1. SELECTING YOUR PHOTOGRAPHS

First and foremost I select ONLY the photographs I want to do layouts for and I use the following “rule”. NOTE: I have to add here that I am not a believer of rules as such when it comes to scrapbooking, as it is a creative process and rules just takes the whimsy out of the magic that occurs during creating pages :D. I have found that if I take a whole pile of photographs along, I get confused as to which I want to scrap and ALWAYS end up not bringing that something along that I saved or purchased with that particular photograph in mind.

2. SELECTING YOUR PAPER & EMBELLISHMENTS

Next I choose paper and embellishments for the layout and usually add in an extra piece of plain cardstock just in case I decide to make an additional embellishment for the page. I store types of embellishment together in a ziplock bag in a large storage container; for example, I have a bag labeled butterflies, vacation, bling, flowers, etc. At this point, I pull out the corresponding bag of embellishments, and choose the ones that suite the page/theme. These I place into smaller ziplock bags. I also have my ribbons stored in ziplock bags by colour, so it make it easier for me to see EVERYTHING in the colour range, and select something suitable. NOTE: I take just what I want to use on the layout, e.g. 3 brads, 1m of ribbon, one butterfly and a handful of prima flowers. These I store in a jewelry size ziplock bag.

3. SELECTING THE EXTRA THINGS

Once I have the papers and embellishments chosen, I then turn to my non-consumable stash to see what will work on the layouts. My” non-consumables” are the things like stamps, misters, inks, punches, etc.

4. HOW TO ORGANISE AND TRANSPORT

I have taken some page protectors and cut the ring binding side off, leaving the tree bonded sides in tact. I use these as my project folders. Into this I put the paper, photograph and embellishments I wish to use on the layout. If the embellishments chosen are too bulky to flat pack nicely, for example a roll of tissue tape, I put these separately in a compact plastic container, with the same for all the layouts. If I have any notes to make on the page, I write them on a post-it and stick it to the outside of the plastic page protector. The project layouts are stored and transported in my cropping tote using a commercial paper transporter (I use a Cropper Hopper Page Planner folder, which holds up to 5 page protectors)

5. GO TO STASH WITH EVERY CROP

I have a permanently packed “go to” stash, packed ready to go in a document folder. In this I have the little things I have found over time that I am always looking for, when I want to add a little something extra. This is a personal choice, so I will list some of the things I have and you can customize to your personal scrapping style.

· A4 Sheet of craft paper (or off cuts)

· A4 Vellum sheet (or off cuts)

· A4 White untextured cardstock (or off cuts)

· A4 Sheet inkjet transparency

· A few pages torn from an old novel

· A couple of pages of sheet music

· Tickets from a children’s games centre

· A few meters of natural lace

· A few meters of ribbon printed with ruler markings

· Selection of paper clips

Along with my usual supply of cutting tools and adhesives, I have found that I am usually well enough stocked to complete several layouts without finding that I get part of the way through, and realize I have something in my supplies at home that would have worked well with the page. In the event that I find I need a little something extra, I scout around the other scrappers and see if they have anything that will lend itself to the page and want to swap with something I may have in return. Oops, here is another “rule”… Sharing is caring :D. And, if you are at an open crop at a store, it is always nice to have some products at your fingertips to purchase should you wish. I always make sure I have at least 5 layouts ready for a crop, that way, if my mojo is pumping, I am assured to have more than enough supplies and photos to scrap for the entire crop session

GOING TO A SCRAPPING CLASS

I find out prior to attending the class, what the end layout will look like, then see what I have in my stash that will lend itself to the layout. I use the same principle as in going to a crop session, and pack my tote accordingly. Should the class be all-inclusive, I obviously don’t take stash with me but still always take along my favorite of the month, which currently is Distress Inks and glimmer mists, as well as all my own tools and adhesives. Not all stores have a supply of tools and adhesives that are available for use during a crop/lesson.

This week I asked our fabulous DT to come up with 3, yes THREE layouts, for less than AED 20 (US$5). I find that doing a budget challenge like this, it not only encourages you to think out the box and get creative with items you would normally throw away or not consider for a layout, but it also stirs up those creative juices, because you REALLY need to think about what you are doing!!!

Here is what the DT has come up with and as always, we would love to see what you can come up with on this sort of a budget :D

This layout "Bloom" is made using Prima paintable paper - AED 10.00.
I have cut out the frame from the paintable paper and
colored it in with copic markers. Then I have applied clear Rock candy crackle paint on the colored area.
I then stamped the word "Bloom" and made the O's with flowers and sprayed them with glimmer mist.
The Journaling is done on post-it papers.

For Layout 2 I used a brown clothing tag, Tim holtz products packaging paper and Prima packaging .
The photo frame is made by the tag , Prima packaging and the word Ideology from Tim's packaging.

For Layout 3 I have used handmade fabric flower, 6x6 paper pad cover, Prima packaging .

"Finally , finally I could finish these ….. such a fun challenge!!! I really have to crack my head to get 20dhs for all three layouts …. You know that even a cardstock would cost 4-6 dhs here in Dubai, let alone the embellishment !!!!

So for all three, I just used the normal 150gm textured white paper that we can find anywhere here, A4 size, the cost will be 1dhs each only. For each layout I used one or two papers.

SCNTS Results

With the silly season still ringing in my ears, I have realized that I did not update on the Scrapbook Challenges Next Top Scrapper Competition!!!

The results came in and I am VERY happy to say that I came in at 3rd place!!! I am so pleased and totally loved the competition!!!

WEEK 2

For week 2, we had to choose an old layout we weren't entirely happy with, and do a makeover. This was the layout I wanted to makeover.

This is the made over page, which got me into the TOP 10

WEEK 3

Week 3 required us to take note of the little things we do during a day, and scrap the events. This layout got me into the TOP 5

WEEK 4

Week 4's challenge required us to set our own challenge. I chose to set a challenge of taking 8 points of something/someone you love and scrap them.

This layout got me 3rd place :D

Hi!!

Well, the first day of school holidays have started with a bang!!! My kids have had friends over today and they have provided an endless source of entertainment....every game they have played has been an adventure and I love their imagination!!!

I seem to have forgotten to post the Punky Scraps DT Layouts I have done this month, so without much ado.....

Challenge 1

This challenge was a recipe challenge, whereby we had to use 3 or more of 5 items listed. I chose to use paint, cardboard and ribbon on a white cardstock background...I LOVED this challenge :D

Challenge 2

This challenge was "So What is so Special About You". It was fun having to think of something about yourself that makes you special....I believe that my endless patience is something that is special about me :D

SCNTS Week 4 Submission

Hi Ladies

This is my fourth and final submission for the SCNTS challenge!!! It is a little heart sore, as it marks the end of a wonderful challenge and getting to know the other contestants through their pages....

This challenges was to propose a challenge and submit an example of it.

My challenge was 8-ributes, whereby you select a subject...a loved one, the city you live in, your cat or the city you live in and journal 8 reasons why you think they are GR8 (oh, I had to :D).

It is often the things we love most that go by unappreciated and are the things we need to acknowledge...

I used this opportunity to use my wonderful hubby as my subject...he is fantastic and I wanted to have record of it....

I am very pleased to have made it this far, to the FIAL FIVE, and wish luck to the other 4 ladies submitting layouts :D

Will keep you posted on the outcome of the challenge :D

Scrapbook Challenges Next Top Scrapper - TOP 5

Wahoo!!! I made it to the TOP FIVE of the SCNTS!!! I am so excited to have made it this far, as the ladies entering are all so very talented!!!! Now lets see if I can make it into the TOP TREE!! Oh my gosh, if my tummy was in knots and my nerves shattered before, you must see me now :D I am a wreck!!! Just kidding, I am definitely nervous, as is normal when being judged by your peers, but I am loving having my creativity being stretched in new directions, I find that once I have done something like this, it almost resets my mojo, and it flows fast and furious for a while after!!!

I am working on the final challenge and really hope my ideas are liked enough to make it to the top 3 :D :D

Look What Amy Did!!

Hello!!!

I let my 5 year old daughter have a little play in my craft room the other day. She is always hovering around, asking questions and very often crafting away next to me at my desk.

Last week-end, I had to leave her merrily playing with "our" scrapping stuff while I took care of lunch.

I was still busy in the kitchen when she came to me and proudly said "Mommy, look at this card I made" When I turned around and took the card from her, I was speechless!!! Holy crow!!! It was amazing (I am so totally going to scrap lift this idea from her!!!!)

Here is her card...done on quarter folded computer paper, splattered with brown and black ink and she punched out the butterflies from a piece of white card I was doodling on with my copic markers (yes, I am leaning strongly towards spending a small fortune on some copics and seeing what I can do with them, which will be a blog post for another day!!).

Here is my little princesses AMAZING card....

I know she is my child, but really...from a 5 year old, this is really, really cool :D

If you haven't been following Tim Holtz 12 Tags of Christmas this year, all I can ask is "WHY NOT???" What a truly inspirational man he is, with such awesome ideas....

He really inspires me to think out the box.

I have been really snowed under with a lot of scrapping "got-to-dos's" which is never a problem, because hey, who doesn't want to be forced to scrap???? My brain is fried and my nerves are shot, so just spending a bit of time with Tim (yes, we are on first name basis here, I spend many hours with him on YouTube :D), I feel that I am once again inspired!!!

I have been a busy bee today!! Scrapping my fingers to the bone, and loving it :)

I have got a couple of the upcoming challenges under my belt for Punkyscraps and also for the challenges coming up right here!!!

Hello scrappers!!

We have all all lost our mojo at some stage or another....I know it happens to me a lot. Or perhaps you have seen a layout on your favourite site or scrapping mag, and totally fallen in love with the layout or an element thereof....

This is when we turn to scraplifiting. No, it is not a swear word, it is totally acceptable to lift ideas or the entire layout from another resource, there are just some etiquette rules to follow when you scraplift.

Scraplifting (skrap-lift-ing) – The act of copying ideas and designs from another person’s scrapbook page to use in your own pages. Designs or ideas can be copied in whole or in part and is largely subjective.

1. Do use layouts in magazines and online galleries to expand your scrapbooking horizons. I know for a fact that there are certain color combinations or picture taking techniques that I would never have tried on my own if I hadn’t seen them in use elsewhere. Scrapbooking is a creative activity, and sometimes we just need to be inspired by others. Seeing different techniques, arrangements and creative ideas can help you stretch your wings a bit and work outside of your comfort zone. And when you do that, you’ll be surprised at what you can create!

2. Don’t copy outright, especially if you are entering a contest. This is the scrapbooking equivalent of cheating. Use a simple rule…if you are borrowing more than three elements directly, then you are in danger of being seen as a copycat. If you like the title font, color use and cropping of the pictures, try using a different layout arrangement and title. If the paper catches your eye, do something completely new and different with it. This may not seem like a big deal if you don’t plan on entering a layout in a contest or displaying it online, but practicing adaptations like these will make you a more creative (and more confident) scrapbooker.

3. Do give credit where credit is due. If you are posting your page on an online forum, and were inspired by another person’s layout, let the community know! As long as you haven’t outright copied, the original person is sure to be flattered. Who doesn’t like a little celebrity?

4. Don’t scraplift until you’ve asked yourself a few questions. Analyze the layout and ask yourself what you really like about it. What draws your attention to the page? Is it the contrast between the size of the photo and the title? Is it the additional touches like rivets and ribbon? If you can identify what elements are speaking to you, you might not need to copy at all. In the past, when I’ve taken the time to analyze why I’m drawn to a particular layout, I’ve discovered a way to make that same element totally me and totally original. It’s worth a shot!

I found myself in a "scraplift" situation recently when I was on the SwissgirlDesigns blog and totally fell in love with Rahel's "Cookie TV" layout. I loved the paper monsters she made, and I also liked the look of the layout. So I used inspiration from her page, and did a page of my favourite little man. I then posted the challenge to scraplift to the very talented ladies on the JoSoCrafty DT.

A Peek Into My Craft Space

When I started scrapping in 2002, I was able to stash ALL of my scrapping supplies, including my album in an A2 Storage box, which I could comfortably store in the cupboard, until I was going to scrap, in which case I would haul it out and scrap on our kitchen counter.

Some things have changed since then as I am sure many of you will understand. My "more than adequate stash in a box" has grown into a "not nearly adequate stash in a room" *SIGH*. How on earth did that happen????? Well, I am not ashamed to admit that I am an addict.

We have recently moved house, and for the first time, I have my own craft room. I have had my own craft space ever since moving to Dubai in 2007, but I have always shared it with my husband, who had a tiny part of the area for his desk and computer....(There was no more space available to him :D), and them some shared storage areas....

Moving and having my very own room came with a complication.....storage. Having my own space that I can make girly, has also left me with a master design scheme....black and white fleur de gris, with a touch of turquoise to add colour!!! So, I repurposed our old food store cupboard and turned it into my scrapping stash storage unit. I really disliked the opaque insets in the cupboard, so I decided to cover them with wallpaper.

Here are the before and after pics....I am so happy with the results:D

As time goes on I will keep you posted on the developments in my attempts at interior design :D

Oh My Gosh!!!

What an awesome day!! Hello!!!

Last night I got a bee in my bonnet and instead of going to bed at a respectful hour, I came to my craft room, intending to tidy things up a little...BUT, I ended up throwing out a couple of pages instead!!!

I would like to share them with you:)

I picked up this fun Halloween die cut set from Creative Hands.....it was such fun working with it :)

I used some of the items from the Lil Bees Exclusive kit for November in this layout, as well as a couple of Prima goodies from my stash. The stamps from the November kit are totally awesome....

New Layouts

Hi

I have a few new layouts to show you....

I created this layout using elements from a Karen Foster Halloween pack. I used old school paper piecing to make the two jack-o-lanterns on the page.

This is a layout I did earlier in the year. It is of the sunset from Barasti's on Christmas Day

I have been given my second assignment from Scrap Inspire Create and it will be posted on their blog next week some time....I thoroughly enjoyed the challenge this month and had to think outside the box, as we were requested to add an element to the page which I would normally not do!!! I will let you know as soon as the challenge is posted on the blog :)

SwissgirlDesigns Feature/Think Smart About Your Stash

Hello fellow addicts :D

As you all know, I am crazy about the stamp sets from SwissgirlDesigns. Rahel has kindly put up a feature of my work in which I have mostly used her stamps. Thanks Rahel, it is an honor!!!

I am totally inspired by Rahel's layouts. She really goes back to the core of scrapbooking, by using bits and pieces of "free" treasure in her layouts, or making her own embellishments using her amazing creative talent!!

She recently did a layout called "Cookie TV" and she made the cutest little monsters using dollar store wiggly eyes and creatively cutting out paper into little shapes. Check it out here.

Over the last few months I have done a serious sort out of my scrap stash, and have found that I have embellishments that I bought on a whim, and years later, are still sitting unused in my stash. Our TT (Tuesday Therapy) girls have recently decided to thin out our personal supplies. We have marked the complete and partially used goodies we are no longer using with a small dirham price (between Dhs2 and Dhs5). The goodies are then taken along to all of our copping sessions and our fellow scrappers can rummage through, see if there is anything we like, and then buy the item. We work on an "honesty box" system, where each of us has a little jar with our names on, and it is up to the "purchaser" to ensure they pay for the items taken.

As far as I am concerned, this is such an awesome idea, as we have all found something in the other persons stash box that we love, have managed to get it for a steal, and then the recipient ends up with a little bit extra cash to spend on more scrapping supplies...

In today's economy, there are VERY few people who can afford to spend piles and piles of cash on unnecessary items, and why should our scrapping suffer the consequences. This brings me back to Rahel, her layouts are totally stunning, always different, and if you watch her video about her scrap space here, Rahel uses a small amount of choice items and creates her own embellishments, by thinking creatively and using what she has (punches, stamps, paint, paper) along with some main stream store treasures to create awesome, inspiring layouts!!!

I have found myself recently buying scrapping stash that has multi use, for example, if I cannot resist a book of tags, I make sure that they are either conducive to being altered, or are neutral enough to be used over and over. And don't forget to look at the packaging your goodies come in, most of the stuff now comes with beautiful packaging, that can be cut, punched or torn to be used in your layouts.

Even from up on my soap box, I must admit that I am addicted to acrylic stamps, and very rarely can resist a purchase....but I now do it with slightly less guilt, as I know that they can be used over and over, in so many ways and I am not taking home things I do not necessarily need.

At the end of the day, I am not saying that you must stop buying your special goodies, just think smart and make sure you are adding creatively to your stash, rather than just adding "white elephants" to your stash :D

Hello scrappers!!!

I am pouring over all your fabulous layout submissions. Thanks to all of you who have sent in your WONDERFUL pages, there are some super talented people out there. I can tell you, I will be hard pressed to choose :) I am taking my personal favorite layout from all the submissions, and getting a third party to choose their favorites....it is the only subjective way I can choose DT members. (I cannot choose, as all of them are fantastic, so I am giving the job to someone else!!!)

I have just received great news!!! My next giveaway has been kindly donated by Annais of Creative Hands. I like it sooooo much, I may just have to keep it!!! (Nah, that would be way too rude). Watch this space for a video tutorial and the giveaway reveal.

Last month I had a giveaway, which consisted of a chipboard mini album and some bits and pieces to go with it. Riri won the package, and look at what she did with the stash!!!!

Trying out my new craft space

Hello!!

Even though I have had a bustling household, with all my extra, very special guests, I managed to steal a little of scrapping time over the last few days. I had a DT Challenge for Scrap Inspire Create which is due today.

I love my new craft space!!! The lighting is poor, but with a little help from a desk lamp, I am able to craft happily!!!

I am looking forward to many happy hours in my happy place!!!

Some Layouts

Hi!!

I would like to share a couple of my older layouts with you.

This is a photo of Amy, my lovely little daughter. She dressed up as a fairy for Halloween 2008. We were in South Africa for a family wedding. I love this picture so much, and it really didn't need much, just a nice title, some ric-rac ribbon and my all time favorite and often featured, prima and silk flowers!!!

This picture was taken soon after we moved to Dubai. I just love the way Amy processed the sand...I printed my journalling on to cardstock, then cut it out and placed it on the page. I created a "filmstrip" on the left hand size, by printing pictures the same size, attaching to cardstock and trimming accordingly. I attached paper clips to the "filmstrip".

Thanks for your continued support during the "baron times" on the blog while I have been moving house!!!

It is so. I am done inshalla...no really, I am done, finished unpacking!!! My new home is awesome, I am such a happy bunny!!! I have a lovely garden, the grass is still growing in, but will be awesome in a couple of weeks. I have a lovely craftroom, with an en-suite bathroom!!! Before you drool, I have set up camp in the maids room (hence the bathroom attached!!)

I have a string of visitors arriving from Istanbul, London and Johannesburg within the next week, so I will be busy tour guiding around Dubai. I can't wait to show my family (the ones who haven't been here yet) my home!!!

I have a few projects up my sleeve, including a video tutorial with products available from Creative Hands. It is guaranteed to brighten your craft area and make you smile....keep watching!!!

Ten Minute Page - SwissgirlDesigns Stamps

Hello!!

I had the pleasure of picking up my September Exclusive kit from Lil Bees Boutique yesterday. Wow oh wow...what lovely goodies in this months kit!!!

The travel size Glossy Accents is such a good idea, no more carting your huge bottle of Glossy Accents around with you when you go on crops!!

The prima flowers and masks are stunning, will make any project super special as well as a few treats from the Tim Holtz collection!!!

I know I will be using the clock very soon in one of my layouts. We all know how much I love my clocks and compasses!!

I received my stamps from SwissgirlDesigns a couple of days ago. I am in the middle of moving house so time to blog has been seriously shaved!!!

If you look very carefully, you see a fairy facing left, with her hair in a bun, arms stretched up towards the flower...

I always hoped, but now I am sure:)

Hello!!

Apologies to any of you who find yourself here because of the post on Facebook. I will be repeating myself.

I met with Hana to day of Lil Bees Designs. I got my grubby little paws on next month's Main Kit. Oh My Golly Gosh!!! If you haven't thought of subscribing before, NOW is the time. This is the most jam packed kit yet in my opinion. As Hana has "leaked" before, next month's kit contains and album....AND SO MUCH MORE!!!

I am working on a layout or two, which will be posted on her site as or along with "SNEAK PEAKS". I am working on Video Tutorials on the pages, so if you are stuck for ideas, the layouts will be available for your viewing!! Please bear with me if the videos are a few days behind the kits...I will try my best to get them out in time!!!

I have also been privileged to to get a look a the Stamp Kit for next month too...LOVE IT!!

Keep on looking at Lil Bees site for sneak peaks and I can promise that the kit is WELL worth it!!

SwissGirlDesigns Does It Again!!!!

Hi

You all know how much I love the inspiration that flows from Rahel's site, swissgirldesigns.com. Well, logging on to her site this morning, I was so happy to see that she has launched her new acrylic stamp range.

I have my personal favorite, which is the Paint Splatters, but there seems to be something for everyone in the range. I have already put my personal favorites on back order with her, as the stamps for re-sale will only arrive with her some time next week.

In the interest of saving on shipping fees, I have decided to see if anyone else would like the stamps and I will place a bulk order with her. I am ordering directly from her and am not putting a mark up or such on the items....

I am estimating that the stamps will be in the region of AED60 per set, excluding P&P.

Hi

I was sorting through some scrapping related pictures, and came across these pics I took of my craft space. I took them while I was working on the "Friends" Scrapbook Tutorial. I have just recently managed to get the space just how I want it...and then Murphy deals us a Joker and we are moving house in a month!!! I hope I get just as cosy a corner in our new home :)

No matter how big the surface area is that I have to scrap on, I somehow manage to fill it while working on a project!!
